I wrote a post about making connections in a previous incarnation of this blog. As I settle into making another attempt, my sentiment still rings true – connecting is the thing to do. Connecting comes in myriad forms. From listening to students stories to meeting with parents, conferencing with students, engaging with colleagues on twitter, sharing resources and research, supporting positive relationships and social responsibility. The list can go on and on.
Making connections, building bridges requires continuous work. There is no resting on your laurels. It is imperative that you are always asking questions. How has this student started their day? What can I do to support professional learning? What has contributed to this student conflict? Have I consulted the right stakeholders? Can we revisit this decision? Again, on and on. I say this, not to complain about the many things to do but to share my belief that this constant questioning, reflection, evaluation of decisions is integral to building bridges. Are the piers strong, can the bridge withstand the forces that will be placed on it?
Ongoing reflection, discussion of practice and openness and vulnerability fosters strong connections between school staff, students, parents, and the community. A connected culture is a learning culture and a learning culture that constantly looks to improve is a bridge we should all strive to build.
